Piezoelectric ultrasonic micro/milli-scale actuators

A growing demand for actuators with a volume of less than 1 mm3 has driven researchers to produce a varied range of micro/milli-scale designs. By examining the underlying physics of the actuator operation we are able to demonstrate why piezoelectric ultrasonic actuators have the greatest potential to meet this need. Moreover, it allows us to create a new classification system for piezoelectric ...

Piezoelectric Actuators for Synthetic Jet Applications

Synthetic jets have been identified and utilized widely in airflow control applications. These jets of air are usually created by the use of compressed air, or an electromechanically driven vibrating platform. All of these approaches produce desired results in airflow-control such as enhanced lift and increased maneuverability. Despite the results however, system weight, size, response time and...

Component-Based Approach for Molecular Modelling Applications

In this paper I describe a work in progress which combines concepts of components based authoring, physically based simulation and a new I/O device for molecular modelling applications. In my approach the user of a 3D interactive visualization of physically based simulations at molecular and atomic level is seen as an author of a 3D animation. According to the field of application a new I/O dev...

Modelling and testing of a piezoelectric ultrasonic micro-motor suitable for in vivo micro-robotic applications

A piezoelectric ultrasonic resonant micro-motor is developed with a stator diameter of 241 μm and an overall diameter of 400 μm. The motor is shown to produce a start-up torque of 1.2 nN m and a peak output power of 0.25 μW as designed, with a preload of 46.6 μN. An increase in preload to 2264 μN improved the performance to a start-up torque of 29 nN m and a peak output power of 9.1 μW. The mot...
